16 June 2011
Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra

Liu Fang
Date : June 16, 2011
Time : 8:00 PM
Soloist: Liu Fang, pipa
Most widely known for his Oscar-winning original score of Ang Lee’s film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, Tan Dun’s interest lies in breaking the boundaries between classical and non classical, Eastern and Western traditions. His “Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra” is a reworking of one of his most popular post-modern works “Ghost Opera”, into a more conventional concerto form. The theatrical nature of the earlier work is respected through the contribution of the string players who are required to “stomp, yip, yell, sigh and hand-slap”. Liu Fang, soloist for this concerto, will also perform several traditional pieces for the pipa. She will talk about the pipa which is a four-stringed lute, one of the oldest Chinese musical instrument.

Soloist : Kristin Mueller-Heaslip, soprano
Benjamin Britten’s “Les Illuminations” is a continuation of his imaginative exploitation of string orchestra sonorities. One of his earlier works composed before his 30th birthday, “Les Illuminations” shows not only a mastery of string writing but also an innate sensitivity to Arthur Rimbaud’s poems. Soprano Kristin Mueller-Heaslip will be a guest of the MCO as part of the first prize in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition in Manitoba which she won in 2008.
